Job’s Wisdom Discourse and Personal Defense

Wrongfully Accused

Introduction: Priming the pump for tonight’s discussion.

Let’s begin with our own observations. Was there a moment where God spoke to you, showed you something new, or reminded you of a familiar truth through the message this week?

Exploration: Questions to guide our group discussion.

  1. Troublesome times can be frustrating when we don’t understand why we’re suffering. Like Job, we’ve learned that God may not always answer the “why” questions that we ask about our tribulations, and He isn’t obligated to. What did we learn from our Job study about this, and what insights did the Lord give us as we looked at Job’s wisdom discourse?

  2. Job taught us that when we don’t understand why we’re going through a trial, tribulation, or season of suffering, we can trust in the person, nature, and character of God. How does it comfort us to know the true nature of our God, to know that there is nothing that will come into our lives that God does not allow, and to respond to that with greater faith? What stands in the way of trusting God to superintend our way when we don’t understand His ways?

  3. We discussed the importance of making a decision now that God is a God worth following…whether we’re living in joy or in sorrow. Unfortunately, many people expect that following God brings the promise of exceptional blessings without any hard times in life. It isn’t surprising that someone who believes like that might fall away from God when hard times come…perhaps even saying, “this Jesus thing isn’t working for me.” How does making a decision to follow God, and taking up that cross to follow God with the fear of the Lord, lead to obedience in our follower-ship even when we don’t “feel” like God is near?

Additional Scriptures for Deeper Study:

  • 2 Corinthians 11:22-22
  • Philippians 3:2-16
  • Galatians 2:20-21
  • 1 Kings 17:1-24

Application: How can I apply this to my life this week?

  1. How might you articulate the one thing that God spoke to you in the message this week to help you grow in your walk of faith? Can you share your one thing with the group?

  2. How is God teaching you about the importance of walking with Him in all seasons, in trusting Him at all times, and in staying the course when times get tough?
