What if Hurry isn’t Heroic?
“Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day.” —Dallas Willard
“If the devil can’t make you sin, he’ll make you busy.” —Corrie Ten Boom
“For many of us the great danger is not that we will renounce our faith. It is that we will become so distracted and rushed and preoccupied that we will settle for a mediocre version of it. We will just skim our lives instead of actually living them.” —John Ortberg
Silence and Solitude
Jesus valued
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness (Greek: eremos) to be tempted there by the devil. —Matthew 4:1 (NLT)
“The wilderness isn’t the place of weakness; it’s the place of strength.” —John Mark Comer
Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place (eremos) to pray. —Mark 1:35 (ESV)
The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place (eremos) and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. So they left by boat for a quiet place (eremos), where they could be alone. —Mark 6:30-32
But despite Jesus’ instructions, the report of his power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear him preach and to be healed of their diseases. But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness (eremos) for prayer —Luke 5:15-16 (ESV)
How do we follow Jesus’ example?
