Series: Romans – Grasping The Gospel
Sermon Title: Part 53 – In Essentials Unity, In Non-Essentials Liberty, In All Things Charity
Scripture: Romans 14:1-9
Speaker: Pastor Mark Pospisil
Questions:
How would you describe what something that is “essential to the faith” is? On what do you base that definition?
What are some things important to you that are non-essentials? What’s the difference between an open-handed and closed-handed issue? Is it ever appropriate to divide over something? What usually causes division in the church?
In Romans 14:1-3, we are instructed to receive someone who is “weak in the faith.” What reason in verse 3 does Paul give for receiving such a person without despising him? How can we as disciples of Jesus receive such a person without becoming condescending or looking down on that person?
Another reason Paul gives for receiving someone who is “weak in the faith” is found in verse 4. Why does Paul say that God is in the best position to judge that person?
In verses 7-8, Paul talks about living and dying “to the Lord.” In your own words, what does it mean to “live to the Lord” and “die to the Lord?”
How does reading the statement in verse 8—“whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s”—help you to better love and receive those believers who are “weak in the faith?” What hope does this give us as well?
After studying Romans 14:1-9, what is one attitude or action you will add, eliminate, or change this week? How can you better welcome others and have charity in all things?
