Ephesians 6:19 Prayer and Closing
Verse 19
Pray on my behalf:
-That utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth – “Utterance” is the Greek word logos. Paul wants to speak the proper words when he shares the gospel. Note the parallel request in Colossians 4:2-4.
-To make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel – Paul wanted to be fearless and confident when he preached the gospel.
Verse 20
For which I am an ambassador in chains –
Paul’s heavenly position was seated with Christ! His earthly condition was being chained in a cold dark dungeon.
…I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. Philippians 4:11
That in proclaiming it (the gospel) I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak –
Paul did not ask for prayer for his circumstances, but that in his circumstances he might be bold in speaking the gospel to whomever would give a willing ear.
Verses 21-22
Tychicus – Paul sent the letter with Tychicus so that they would be comforted. Tychicus is mentioned five times in the New Testament and appears to be one of Paul’s trusted companions and fellow ministers (Acts 20:4, Eph. 6:21, Col. 4:7, 2 Tim. 4:12, Titus 3:12).
Verses 23-24
Paul mentions three Christian virtues:
-Peace – Needed because of the Jewish-Gentile problems in the church.
-Love – Mutual love is the key to peace.
-Faith – Mutual love rests on a common faith. God the Father and Jesus Christ are the ultimate source of all three of these essential qualities.
Verses 23-24
Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with a love incorruptible –
Paul began the letter referencing God’s grace and he ends it with God’s grace. It is by God’s grace that sinners are saved, the church is born, and that believers may love one another purely, with proper motives.
Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with a love incorruptible –
The more a person falls in love with Jesus the greater example of God’s grace he or she will become. The more our condition reflects our exalted position in Christ the greater will be our effectiveness for Him.
Questions for reflection…
For whom do you pray daily?
Do you pray for boldness in sharing the gospel?
Are you prepared so that you will have the proper words to speak when the opportunity arises?
