Matthew 10:2-4 “The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter,and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.” (Cf. I. What is a Disciple?
•Disciple (Mathetes in Greek): “learner, student;someone who follows another person”
Matthew 10:1 “And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits,to cast them out,and to heal every disease and every affliction.”
•Apostle (Apostoloi in Greek): “one who is sent, messenger”
Luke 6:13 “And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles:”
II. A Picture of Discipleship
A. God Works Through
Acts 4:13 “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.”
1 Timothy 4:12 “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”
1 Corinthians 1:20–21 “Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.”
1 Corinthians 1:26-29 “For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.”
