Why are churches always asking for money?

  • Some live on the brink of losing their building or laying off staff
  • Some prosperity preachers need to get or maintain mansions & jets
  • Some are trying to buy big crowds via great shows
  • But for most, it’s because Greed is Damning and Mission is Expensive

BECAUSE GREED IS DAMNING

“9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation,
into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people
into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of
evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the
faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” —1 Timothy 6:9–10
(see also Luke 12:15)

“1 He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”” —Luke 19:1–10

… AND MISSION IS EXPENSIVE (SORT OF)

“18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”” —Matthew 28:18–20

“1 Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.” Luke 8:1–3

LET’S LAY ALL THE CARDS ON THE TABLE AND ADDRESS GOD’S WRATH, LOVE, AND JESUS AS THE ONLY WAY TO BE SAVED

“16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”” —John 3:16

“13 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” —Acts 4:12
