Do Non-Christians Go to Hell?
Dr. Mark Foster
Part of Finding Faith in a World of Doubt
April 14, 2024

This is right and acceptable before God our Savior, who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For

there is one God;
there is also one mediator between God and humankind,
Christ Jesus, himself human,
who gave himself a ransom for all
—this was attested at the right time. —1 Timothy 2:3-6a

Introduction:

In a 2023 survey, 95% of those surveyed said they struggle with doubt.

Doubt is normal.

We want certainty, but God gives us mystery.

Doubt is not an enemy, but a

to a deeper and more authentic faith.

From

to resurrection, doubt was a part of Jesus’ story.

Doubt does not stop the

of God. Matthew 28:16-20

Imperfect faith is faith

.

What Is Hell?

Hell is not the

1321 poem “Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri.

Heaven is where what

wants done is done.

Hell is where everyone does what

want done regardless of the effects on others.

What Does the Bible Say about Hell?

God’s love extends to all people, including people of other faiths whom God judges by their

. (Genesis 20:2-7)

In the Old Testament, the dead go to Sheol, the realm of the dead and the destination of all good and bad.

Human beings judge by outward appearance while God judges our

. (1 Samuel 16:7)

In the Book of Jonah, God loves and forgives the

while Jonah thinks they are beyond saving.

“It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convict, God’s job to judge and my job to love.” —Billy Graham

In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of hell

times.

The word Jesus used was Gehenna, translated hell, was a well-known burning

dump outside Jerusalem.

What Is God’s Will When It Comes to Heaven and Hell?

Heaven tends to

the afflicted and the comfortable. (Matthew 25:31-46)

We all appear before the

seat of Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:10-11)

Is it God’s will to send 5,440,000,000 or

of people on the planet to hell? (2 Peter 3:9)

God’s will is that

is with him in heaven.

Christian Exclusivism holds that only Christians receive eternal life somewhat regardless of behavior.

Christian Universalism holds that everyone will be saved because God desires it regardless of behavior. (1 Cor 15:22)

Christian Inclusivism (the Methodist way) holds that Christ is the only way to salvation, God desires all
to be saved, and God allows free will to accept or reject being with Jesus in heaven. (John 14:6)

Jesus gets to

because Jesus is the only good and just judge. (Philippians 2:10-11)

In heaven all people are welcome, all

are not.

That’s why all people are welcome here, but all

are not. (Galatians 5:20-22a)

My Personal Expectation

When we die, we will see

face to face.

All are

at Jesus’ table where love, forgiveness, humility, and peace reign.

God will

your free will.

Action Steps:

Love and value people of other faiths

share your own honestly allowing for similarities and differences and leaving the results to God who desires all to be saved.
