Sermon Title: Why get baptized?
Scripture: Romans 6:1-4

God speaks to us through words and through pictures.

The two pictures Jesus uses to describe the gospel are:
- The Tub
- The Table

We all need to be washed and we all need to be fed. This is how the Christian life begins and how it is sustained.

“baptism” literally means “to dip, plunge, or immerse”. This is derived from the Greek word “βαπτίζω” (baptizo) which refers to the act of immersing something, like dyeing a garment.
Just as circumcision was a sign of the old covenant that was given to infants following their physical birth, so we believe that baptism, the sign of the new covenant, should be for believers following their spiritual birth. Circumcision showed you belonged to Abraham by physical birth. Baptism seals the fact you belong to Jesus Christ by faith and the promises of God to those in Christ, are yours.

3 words of warning:
1. We need to avoid building a checklist approach to the christian faith.
2. We must avoid breaking fellowship with those who practice baptism differently.
3. We must not become indifferent about baptism.

God speaks in baptism:
1. You are Washed. (1 Cor 6:11)
2. You have died. (Romans 6:3)
3. You are alive. (Romans 6:4)

We speak in baptism:
1. I believe (Romans 10:9)
2. I obey (Matthew 28:19-20)
3. I belong (1 Corinthians 12:13)
