
One Thing Is Needed
“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go…” Luke 10:1
“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha
opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he
said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and
asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’
‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42
- Living in a hurry adds more frustration to your life
- Living in a hurry steals your joy
- Living in a hurry makes it difficult to hear from God
“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the Lord swore to give your forefathers…” Deuteronomy 11:18-21
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
- To receive rest, we must step into Jesus’ rest
“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” Isaiah 40:29-31 - To receive rest, we must take on Jesus’ easy and light yoke
“Take my yoke upon you…” Matthew 11:29
“Pile your troubles on God’s shoulders and He’ll carry your load and help you out.” Psalms 55:2
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7 - To receive rest, learn and lean into Jesus
“Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
