5 Day Devotional
We Who Struggle With God
Day 1: Recognizing God’s Righteousness
Reading: Nehemiah 9:1-6
Devotional: As we read about the Israelites gathering to confess their sins and worship God, we’re reminded of the importance of recognizing God’s righteousness. Like the Israelites, we often lose sight of God’s holiness amidst our daily struggles.
Take time today to reflect on God’s greatness and perfection. How does acknowledging His righteousness change your perspective on your own life and challenges? Consider areas where you might have elevated worldly pursuits above your relationship with God. Pray for a renewed sense of awe at God’s majesty and a desire to align your priorities with His will.
Day 2: The Power of Repentance
Reading: 1 John 1:8-9, Romans 10:9-10
Devotional: Today’s readings emphasize the transformative power of confession and repentance. Just as the Israelites in Nehemiah’s time confessed not only their sins but those of their ancestors, we too are called to recognize the depth of our need for God’s forgiveness.
Reflect on areas in your life where you may have been “bold in sin and ashamed in repentance,” as Saint John Chrysostom cautioned against. How can you cultivate a spirit of boldness in repentance? Consider making a list of things you need to bring before God, trusting in His faithfulness to forgive and cleanse you.
Day 3: God’s Presence Among Us
Reading: John 1:14, Acts 2:1-4
Devotional: The Feast of Tabernacles celebrated in Nehemiah’s time reminds us of God’s desire to dwell among His people. This finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who “tabernacled” among us, and in the Holy Spirit, who now dwells within believers.
Reflect on what it means to carry God’s presence with you into every situation. How can you be more aware of the Holy Spirit’s guidance in your daily life? Consider areas where you need to invite God’s presence to bring light into darkness, whether in your personal life or in your community.
Day 4: Wrestling with God
Reading: Genesis 32:22-32
Devotional: The name Israel means “he who wrestles with God,” reminding us that struggling with faith is part of our spiritual journey. Like Jacob, we often find ourselves wrestling with God’s will, His timing, or His methods.
What are you currently wrestling with in your relationship with God? Remember that even in our struggles, God is present and working. How might your current “wrestling match” with God be an opportunity for growth and deeper trust? Pray for the strength to persevere and the wisdom to recognize God’s blessings even in difficult times.
Day 5: Living in Covenant with God
Reading: Romans 6:1-14
Devotional: The Israelites in Nehemiah’s time renewed their covenant with God, committing to follow His ways. As believers in Christ, we are part of a new covenant, sealed by Jesus’ sacrifice. This covenant calls us to “walk in newness of life.” Reflect on what it means to live as someone who has died to sin and been raised with Christ. How does this identity impact your daily choices and priorities? Consider writing your own personal covenant with God, outlining specific commitments you feel led to make in response to His grace and love.
