The Beatitudes: Poor in Spirit
We are going to look at the very first character quality Jesus gives us here in Matthew - Foundational.
Matthew 5:3:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
What Does “Poor in Spirit” mean?
Luke 18:9-10:
To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
Luke 18:11-12:
The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’
Luke 18:13-14:
“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
God Sees Posture / Not Position.
Comparing to Others / Confessing to God.
2 Corinthians 10:12:
“When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”
Pride Parades / Humility Pleads.
Isaiah 64:6a:
All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags..
Matthew 5:3:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
We cannot receive grace until we admit our need for it.
Philippians 2:6–8:
…he emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant…obedient to death on a cross.
Are you aware of your need for God today?
Today….will you humble yourself before GOD.
