Jesus doesn’t avoid sinners; he pursues them with redeeming love and transforming grace.
SERMON NOTES
APPLICATION GUIDE
Discuss:
Can you think of a time when someone showed you kindness or friendship when you least deserved it? How did it affect you?
What stands out to you about Jesus’ approach to Levi at the tax booth? What does it say about who he calls?
Why do you think Jesus chose to recline and eat with “tax collectors and sinners”? What message was he sending—both to them and to the watching religious leaders?
How does Jesus’ proverb in verse 17 challenge the way we view our own spiritual health and need?
Apply:
Are there any “unworthy” or “unwanted” people in your life that you struggle to see through the lens of Jesus’ grace?
What excuses or barriers might keep you from responding to Jesus’ invitation to follow Him more fully—like Levi did?
Is your faith more focused on outward appearance or inward transformation? What would it look like to shift your focus toward Jesus’ heart?
Commit:
Jesus invited sinners to follow him—and many said yes. Now he’s inviting you. Where is Jesus calling you to follow? Who is he leading you to pursue with His love? What step of obedience is he asking you to take? Will you say yes?
Further Study:
Compare Jesus’ call of Levi in Mark 2:13–17 with his call of Peter, James, and John in Mark 1:16–20. What similarities and differences do you notice?
