QUESTIONS For personal reflection or group discussion
1. Read Matthew 5:3-12. Jesus is welcoming into his kingdom all those often rejected by other social structures: The weak, the destitute, the meek. He saw them and invited them in. How does this make you feel? What does this imply about how to see others?
2. To be “poor in spirit” means to be spiritually bankrupt; to “hit bottom.” Why is this actually a blessing, though it may not feel like it at the time? Have you even hit bottom in your own life and realized you needed God? Why is the opposite of this, pride, such a danger to the spiritual life?
3. Look at the promises at the end of each beatitude. How does believing and embracing that these are true help when you are mourning or slandered or insulted –– or any of the other conditions in these verses?
