“LIVING THE TRUTH IN JESUS’ NAME”
Colossians 3:5-9
I. INTRODUCTION:
A. The “divide and conquer” strategy:
B. Addressing this divisive strategy with the proper
mindset:
1. Benefits of the “positives”:
2. Benefits of the “negatives”:
C. Beginning with a negative command: v. 5a
1. “Therefore”:
2. “Mortify”:
3. “Your members”:
II. THE SPECIFICS OF THE FOOTPRINTS YOU ARE
LEAVING: vv. 5-9
A. Personal sins to put to death: v. 5b “Dwelling on
whose you are will dictate how you live”:
1. “Fornication”:
2. “Uncleanness”:
3. “Inordinate affection”:
4. “Evil desire”:
5. “Covetousness which is idolatry”:
B. Social sins to put to death: vv. 8-9a
1. “Anger”:
2. “Wrath”:
- “Malice”:
- “Blasphemy”:
- “Filthy communication”:
- “Lie not one to another”: (See Jn. 8:44)
C. Why both lists must be aggressively addressed: vv. 6-7
1. “The wrath of God cometh”: v. 6 (Gal. 6:7; Heb.
10:29-31; 12:5-15; Mt. 25:14-30)
2. “Ye also walked”: v. 7 (II Cor. 5:17; Rom. 6:1-2)
a. “Walked”
b. “Lived”
III. PRINCIPLES TO PERSONALLY APPLY:
(Together becoming “people of the Word” in principle AND in practice)
A. Those who tend to be unforgiving and the most critically
divisive, are often those who are plagued with guilt over
their own personal sin that they are refusing to address.
(Mt. 7:5; Gal. 6:1)
B. Any believer can be victorious with the sins in their lists
if they will make two simultaneous and continual
choices; to “feed the right thing and starve the wrong
thing”. (Col. 3:16; Phil. 4:8)
* The point - The choice you make determines the
footsteps you leave behind for the next generation.
C. Focusing on Christ is for the discouraged who think
their particular sin is a “stronghold” they cannot possibly
break. (Phil. 4:13; II Cor. 10:4-5)
- The point – Your mission in life will be accomplished if
you break the stronghold by “living the truth in Jesus’
name”.
Sinners Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I was made by you and I was made for you, but
I have been living for myself. I am sorry for that self-rule you call sin.
I believe that Jesus Christ being my creator God, died, was buried,
and rose again to pay the insurmountable debt that my sin has
created. So right now, I am turning from a life of going my own way,
to by faith, place my trust in Jesus Christ, to pay the debt of all my
sin, and to get me to heaven, when I breath my last breath. Lord
Jesus, from today on, I am yours. Thanks for saving me, this very
moment, in Jesus name, Amen.
