Savior, Messiah, & Lord

Luke 2:8-11 contains the best news ever! God sent His Son to save us! Jesus is God who has come out of heaven. What are three defining things we learn about Jesus in the 12 words of v. 11? He is our Savior, Messiah, and Lord.

I. Savior

A. Jesus’ primary intention in coming was to save you from your sin.

  1. Romans 3:10, 23 - every person on the planet is guilty of sin and deserves eternity in hell.

  2. Jesus came to rescue us from the penalty or guilt sin brings.

B. The Saving God. Our God is known as a deliverer from danger. He is a rescuer.

  1. God is very different from manmade gods: i.e., uninterested/aloof; vicious/angry.

  2. The God of the Old Testament:

a) Psalm 51:10, 12, 14 -

b) Isaiah 63:9: In all their distress He was distressed, And the angel of His presence saved them; In His love and in His mercy He redeemed them, And He lifted them and

them all the days of old.

  1. The God of the New Testament:

a) By His very nature, God is a Savior. And Jesus is our Savior because He is God.

b) Titus 2:13: Jesus is our Great God and Savior. See also 2 Peter 1:11.

II. Messiah

A. Luke 2:11: CSB: The

, the Lord. Others say Christ the Lord.

  1. Messiah: “anointed one.” Used in appointing a person to special service, like a priest or king.

B. Philippians 2:11: and

III. The Lord

A. 2:11: The Lord. A term of respect given to someone in a position of leadership or authority.

B. When we reference Jesus as our divine Lord we are acknowledging: He is the

of Kings, Revelation 17:14; 19:16.

C. His authority over us as King:

  1. Colossians 1:18: He is also the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have

    in everything.

  2. Hebrews 13:20–21: working in us what is

    in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

  3. 2 Corinthians 5:9: …we make it our

    to be pleasing to him.

D. Do you see Jesus as He rightfully is? King of your life?

IV. As We Close…

A. Luke 2:11: A Savior was born

, who is the Messiah, the Lord.
