Sermon: Out of Sync
Scripture: John 19:1-16
Summary: If you want to be in sync with Jesus, then you will have to deal with your self-preservation instinct. Life, true life, abundant life, the life Jesus promised, is found on the far side of death to self, not the near side.
For Reflection and Discussion
Read Scripture: John 19:1-16
- Where can you see self-preservation at work in your life?
- When has self-preservation caused you to get out of sync with Jesus? Why did it have that effect?
- What examples from Jesus’ life can you give to show he had little regard for his own self-preservation?
- The way Jesus is treated in the leadup to the cross is perfect for bringing out the true nature of who he is. What does his happy submission to pain and mistreatment tell you about who he truly is?
- Who are you most in sync with? The religious leaders, Peter, Pilate or Jesus? Why?
- What is an area in your life where self-preservation is running strong and is causing you to be out of sync with Jesus? What do you need to do about it?
- Read Matthew 16:24-25. What’s the secret in what Jesus is saying? Have you ever tasted it?
