Why Don’t Christians Look Different from Everybody Else?

Romans 12:2; Galatians 5:16-25

Road Trip 09 | Kathy Resler Chambliss | pastor | wyoming campus| first aired on 08.04.19

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. —Romans 12:2 (NLT)
“I could not help but think that somewhere along the way we had missed what was radical about our faith and replaced it with what is comfortable.” —David Platt
“The answer is transformation. To live a life that is truly different, a life of grown-up faith, we need to experience deep and genuine change. It is less about being reformed and more about being transformed. This needs to occur from the inside out.” —Kevin Myers, Grown Up Faith

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. —Galatians 5:16-21 (NLT)

How devoted disciples are different:

I. Primary

becomes the leading of the Holy Spirit instead of desires (5:16-21)
Change: What do I want? How is the Spirit leading me?

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
—Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)

How devoted disciples are different:

II. Definition of success becomes more about

you are than you do (5:22-23)
Change: How am I performing? Am I reflecting the fruit of the Spirit?

“The fruit of the Spirit is not push, drive, climb, grasp and trample. Life is more than a climb to the top of the heap.” —Richard J. Foster
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. —Galatians 5:24-25 (NIV)

How devoted disciples are different:

III.

faith affecting every area of life instead of “matters of faith.” (5:24-25)
Change: What parts of my life will I let God be part of? Lord, what do I have yet to surrender to You?

“Something is wrong when our lives make sense to unbelievers.” —Francis Chan, Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God

Challenge:
Do some honest self evaluation. Which questions above best describe your approach to life? Prayerfully consider the extent to which you are walking in step with the Spirit.

Note on this series:

We encourage you to purchase the book Grown-Up Faith by Kevin Myers and read through it as you track with the summer message series. Messages will still be meaningful if you don’t read the book but it will help you take a deeper dive into biblical responses for big questions of the faith.
