Anxiety is not a sin, it’s a .

Luke 22:42-44 New International Version
42“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

We control our thoughts, or our thoughts us.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 New International Version
3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Philippians 4:8-9 New Living Translation
8And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Peace is a .

Mark 4:38-40 New Living Translation
38Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” 39When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

  • True peace is only found in the presence of God.

John 14:27 New Living Translation
I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

John 14:27 New Living Translation

Question to Ask:

What’s the difference between the peace the world offers and the peace Jesus gives? Can you think of a time when you felt God’s peace even though your circumstances didn’t change? What practices help you stay in God’s presence and experience His peace (e.g., worship, Scripture, silence, community)?

Application:

When anxiety shows up in your life, what does it usually signal—and where do you usually turn first? What’s one anxious or fearful thought you need to surrender to Jesus this week? Spend time in prayer this week being honest with God about your anxiety and struggles. Ask Him for His help in these areas. Ask someone to pray with and for you.
