God’s promises for Israel - Session 3.5

Salvation through works or grace

Old Testament prophets (Moses, Jeremiah, Ezekiel) spoke about the coming New Covenant:
- Deuteronomy 29:4 Promised heart to understand
- Deuteronomy 29:22-28 Humanity is failing to keep the Old Covenant
- Deuteronomy 30:1-5 Promised restoration
- Jeremiah 31:31, 33 New heart, new Spirit, indwelling of Holy Spirit, true holiness

Q22 The prophet Ezekiel prophesied in chapter 36 24“‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the

and bring you into your land. 25I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28Then you will live in the I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God.

In 1948 the Jewish state Israel was founded after 2,000 years of living in the diaspora. Since then, millions of Jews have made aliyah and possess their homeland. Do you agree that this is a sign of God’s fulfillment of Ezekiel 36:24-28?

Q23 Ephesians 2:8-10 says 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Is salvation based on keeping the Law and doing good works? Explain the sequence in verse 10.
