Why Believe Jesus is God?

Each gospel paints a picture of who Jesus is:
- Matthew reveals Him as the King of Kings, showing His Royalty
- Mark reveals Him as the Servant of the Lord, showing His Ministry
- Luke displays Him as the Son of Man, showing His Humanity
- John declares Him as the Son of

, showing His Deity

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only

of the Father, full of grace and truth. —John 1:1-5, 14

The word “

” was in common use at that time:

  • It was all that the Jews and Greeks knew of the reasonings and manifestations of .
  • Just as words communicate who we are, Jesus who God is.

V18 – no one has ever seen God, but the one in the closest place of intimacy has

God to us.

Jesus is God

Himself out in language that men can understand. —S.D. Gordon
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “ .” —Matthew 1:22-23

  • Jesus is as God.
  • The fullness of God’s character, person, and nature.

God became a man in the person

Christ.

31 “If I bear

of Myself, My witness is not true. 32 There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. 33 You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. 35 He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. 36 But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
41 “I do not receive honor from men. 42 But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44 How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? 45 Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” —John 5:31-47

5 that testify that Jesus is God:

1. John the Baptist.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to

concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. —John 1:6-8

2. The

.

-Changing hearts and changing lives, healing bodies, freeing people of their sins, and healing all who are oppressed by Satan.
- Eph 2:10 We are his

created in Christ Jesus.

3. The

.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the

every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. —Philippians 2:9-11

4. The Scriptures.

  • Messianic Prophecies: Jesus fulfilled at least in his earthly ministry.
  • Mathematician Peter Stoner applies the science of probability to just 8 of these prophecies. This lead him to conclude that the chance of the prophesied Messiah fulfilling all eight is one in 100,000,000,000,000,000.

5. Moses.

The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear. —Deuteronomy 18:15
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he

. —Numbers 21:8-9

  • Jesus was typified in the rock that gave Israel water in the wilderness (Numbers 20:8-12 and 1 Corinthians 10:4).
  • The ministry of Jesus was shown in almost every aspect of the seven different kinds of that God commanded Israel to bring (Leviticus 1-7).

Matthew 16:13-17 Who do say that I am?
