Message Notes

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” —John 1:4

“And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.” —Isaiah 8:22

“But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.” —Isaiah 9:1

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” —Isaiah 9:2

“The people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.” —Matthew 4:16

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.” —Isaiah 9:6-7

Wonderful Counselor

“We have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” —1 John 2:1-2

Mighty God

So what is the significance of Jesus being called MIGHTY GOD?

  • Jesus was and is fully God.

  • Jesus would possess absolute power.

“Ah sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” —Jeremiah 32:17

  • Jesus would possess complete authority.

“Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” —Matthew 28:18

Everlasting Father

“No matter how many times we’ve blown it, no matter how many years we’ve been unsuccessfully trying to get better, God attaches no strings to His love. None. His love for us does not depend on our loveliness. It goes one way. As far as our sin may extend, the grace of the Father extends further.” —Tullian Tchividjian (One Way Love)

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” —Hebrews 13:8

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” —Deuteronomy 13:5

Prince of Peace

“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’” —Luke 2:8-10

“For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News.” —2 Timothy 1:9-10

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” —John 8:12
