13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” 16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:13-21

We are in danger of believing that the meaning of life can be found in accumulating money and possessions.

15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” Luke 12:15

Watch Out = take positive action to ward off a foe.

Why does Jesus have such a strong warning to stay vigilant against greed?

GREED IS A SNEAKY SIN

JESUS IS CALLING US TO ADOPT A KINGDOM PERSPECTIVE ON MONEY AND POSSESSIONS.

16 “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ Luke 12:16-19

1.) YOU ARE A STEWARD NOT AN OWNER

18 You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Deuteronomy 8:18

2.) WAKE UP TO THE BREVITY OF LIFE

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself? LUKE 12:20

Fool = someone who acts without God or acts without God’s wisdom.

3.) USE MONEY TO CONNECT YOUR HEART TO GOD’S HEART

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” Luke 12:21

29 And don’t be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don’t worry about such things. 30 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. 31 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need. 32 “So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.
33 “Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. 34 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Luke 12:29-34
