Between Logs & Splinters
Squeeze Play Sermon #4
September 29, 2019

Today is the 4th Message in the Squeeze Play Sermon Series. It’s titled ‘Between Logs and Spinters’

He’s scrubbling!

If We Are the Body

Casting Crowns began singing this powerful song back in 2003! Check out the lyrics

It’s crowded in worship today

As she slips in trying to fade into the faces

The girl’s teasing laughter is carrying farther than they know

Farther than they know

CHORUS:

But if we are the body

Why aren’t His arms reaching?

Why aren’t His hands healing?

Why aren’t His words teaching?

And if we are the body

Why aren’t His feet going?

Why is His love not showing them there is a way?

There is a way

A traveler is far away from home

He sheds his coat and quietly sinks into the back row

The weight of their judgmental glances

Tells him that his chances are better out on the road

CHORUS:

But if we are the body

Why aren’t His arms reaching?

Why aren’t His hands healing?

Why aren’t His words teaching?

And if we are the body

Why aren’t His feet going?

Why is His love not showing them there is a way?

There is a way

Jesus paid much too high a price

For us to pick and choose who should come

And we are the body of Christ

Jesus is the way

CHORUS:

But if we are the body

Why aren’t His arms reaching?

Why aren’t His hands healing?

Why aren’t His words teaching?

And if we are the body

Why aren’t His feet going?

Why is His love not showing them there is a way?

There is a way

We are His hands, we are His feet, we are the body

Testimony

Mrs. Amy Highfill

The First Annual Phos ‘Sinventory’

Between Logs & Splinters

Matthew 7:1-5

1 “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged.

2 For with the judgment you use,you will be judged, and with the measure you use,it will be measured to you.

3 Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the log in your own eye?

4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a log in your eye?

5 Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. —Matthew 7:1-5 [ HCSB ]

We’ve ALL sinned. It’s only because of God’s mercy and active grace that we are saved.

Romans 3:22-26

22 that is, God’s righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ, to all who believe, since there is no distinction.

23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

24 They are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

25 God presented Him as a propitiation through faith in His blood, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His restraint God passed over the sins previously committed.

26 God presented Him to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be righteous and declare righteous the one who has faith in Jesus. —Romans 3:22-26 [ HCSB ]

Pray for God to forgive you.

A Samaritan Woman and a Well

For your personal study this week: John 4:1-26

The Well that Jacob Dug

Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, worn out from His journey, sat down at the well. It was about six in the evening. —John 4:6 [ HCSB ]

The Well

  1. Crossing Culture Divides and Becoming a Missionary
  2. Centered Set VS Bounded Set
  3. Conversation vs Confrontation
  4. Truth and Grace Balanced
  5. Notice Jesus Posture Toward Her
  6. How our approach must change to that of missionaries due to the ‘de-centering’ of the church. We no longer have the bull horn.
  7. Become a Servant Missionary representing Jesus here, there and everywhere, especially at M1D.

8. Phos Community Church as a Well vs a fortress — a centered set vs a bounded set

This is why churched people have such a hard time figuring out what is going on around here. We took this stance right from the start. And, it is not an easy stance to maintain. It is costly.

Would you consider locking arms with us in some or all of the following ways? [ only ‘wear the shoes that fit’, please! There is not judgement here at all, just ways to help Phos acommplish her mission. ]

1. Always be a greeter!

2. This means worshiping well

3. This means singing and being responsive – being worship leaders

4. Consider joining the dream team by attending Starting Point and find your place to serve.
5. Prayerfully consider giving strong so that our church can be stronger – we desperately need to fix our bathrooms and bring them up to 2019 don’t we and wouldn’t it be nice to get that concrete patio completed out on the playground side of our building? If you consider Phos your church home prayerfully do what you can to help your church be stronger financially. When we are stronger we can do more to reach more people. Your church needs your help right now as summer was not kind to her in terms of giving vs expenses

6. Please remain seated and helping eliminate distractions during worship

7. This means turning OFF your cell phone

8. This means becoming more consistent in your attendance so that you can encourage others – sometimes you need the church and sometimes the church needs you.  YOU matter. Your presence matters. We are better when you are here physically loving on one another.

Souls and Futures Are at Stake

Let’s agree to be a church full of people who treat the cross of Jesus as the well wherever we go, but especially here at live worship experiences. Let’s make it easy for people to get to the living water of Christ at the cross.

Be sure to join us for the next two weeks where we will learn how to reach out to others and make a Gospel difference for their sakes and ours.

You never know when the next Amy Highfill is gonna show up in your life or at worship and wouldn’t it be the greatest thing ever to see her grow to a meaningful life in Christ?
