APPLICATION GUIDE
Discuss:
Have you ever received a phone call, letter, or message that changed your life in some way? Maybe it was a job offer, a call from a long-lost friend, or an opportunity you didn’t expect. How did you respond, and how did it impact your life? (Tie-In: Jesus’ call to follow Him is even greater—it’s a call that changes everything.)
In Mark 1:15, Jesus proclaims that “the kingdom of God is at hand.” What does that mean in the context of this passage? How does Jesus describe the proper response to the kingdom?
When Jesus calls Simon, Andrew, James, and John, they immediately leave their nets and follow Him. What does this tell us about the urgency of Jesus’ call?
Jesus tells them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” What do you think He meant by this? How does this connect to their previous profession?
Apply:
Repentance is turning from the old life. Is there something in your life—whether a sin, a habit, or a way of thinking— that you need to turn away from in response to Jesus’ call?
Faith is turning toward Jesus. In what areas of your life do you struggle to fully trust Him? How does belief in the good news change the way you live today?
Discipleship is following Jesus in a new way of life. Jesus didn’t call the disciples to stop fishing—He reoriented their purpose. How has following Jesus changed your purpose in life?
The disciples left their nets, their father, and their security to follow Jesus. What is Jesus calling you to leave behind so that you can follow Him more fully?
Commit:
Jesus doesn’t just call us to acknowledge Him; He calls us to follow Him. This week, intentionally reflect on how you can live out repentance, faith, and discipleship in a tangible way.
Further Study: Read Luke 9:57-62. What do Jesus’ interactions with the would-be disciples teach us about the cost of following Him? How does this passage reinforce what we learned in Mark 1:14-20?
Read Matthew 28:18-20 (The Great Commission). Jesus’ final command to His disciples was to “go and make disciples.” How does this connect with His initial call in Mark 1:17 to be “fishers of men”? What does this mean for your role in God’s kingdom today?
