“ ‘This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites.’” And it was done, as the LORD commanded Moses.” —Leviticus 16:34 (NIV)

Bible Engagement: Week 6, The Exodus/Moses

Book of Leviticus (the word Leviticus means “of the Levites” who were the priests)
Author: Moses
Audience: Israelites
Genre: law: command law as in “do or don’t do this” and case law as in “if this happens, then this”
When: around 1446 BC to 1406 BC probably between their exit from Egypt and entry to Canaan while
they are wandering in the wilderness.
Why: to help God’s redeemed people learn to live in holiness, set apart for God through the payment of offering a blood sacrifice done by the Levite priests for the forgiveness of sin. Jesus referred to Levitical laws as also describing how to love others (Mark 12:31).

Note: This week, Tier One will start the week by finishing key chapters in Exodus and will end with key chapters in Leviticus at the end of the week.
Tier 1: Exodus 14; 16 Red Sea, Sabbath
Tier 2: Leviticus 1; 4
Tier 3: Leviticus 1-5

Tier 1 Questions
Tier 1 (still in Exodus)
1. What physical elements did God provide to lead the Israelites out of Egypt? (see Exodus 13:21-22)

2. Why did the Israelites grumble against the Lord? (See Exodus 15:24 and 16:2-3)

3. God sent to teach the Israelites about His and gave them from work on each Sabbath. How does this way of life differ from the life of slavery under Pharoah? (see Exodus 5:4-14)

Tiers 2-3 Questions
1. Livestock used for a burnt offering had to be a

without . (see Leviticus 1:3 and v 10) Why is it important that the sacrifice was without defect?

2. In Leviticus 1:4 we see the burnt offering served as kāp̄ar, translated as “atonement” in King James, NIV, and ESV or as “to purify” in NLT. This same word was used for Jacob’s efforts to reconcile with his brother Esau in Genesis 32:20. According to these verses, what is the attitude and goal of atonement?

3. According to Leviticus 4: 2-3; 13-14; 27, a sin offering was to be given for sin when the sin became known.
• Which three categories of people were instructed to give this sin offering?

• What does this tell you about the God’s view of sin?

Application

  1. Reflect on the Scripture from today. Note one thing you learned about God, people, and a theme.

  2. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal if you need to repent for grumbling against God or for sinning against Him. Respond to His loving correction and reconciliation through Jesus’s blood.
