“Who Really Needs This [Gift]?”
It is our human nature to be hesitant with things that make us afraid or uncomfortable
- What values or principles have been abused, causing you to not
want any part of it?
Tongues has been misunderstood and feared because
- Now you do not want to participate in the gifting and this most power spiritual principle that God has given you.
Am I Rejecting My Gift [of Tongues]
Can’t I decline a gift?
After all the people had been baptized, Jesus also was baptized. While he was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit came down upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my own dear Son. I am pleased with you.” —Luke 3:21-22 (GNT)
But, why this gift?
- When I pray in tongues, it’s an intimate worship time with me and God
If you praise him in the private language of tongues, God understands you but no one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and him. —1 Corinthians 14:2b (MSG)
- I have no choice but to focus on God in prayer when I can’t understand my own words
Do I really need this gift?
- This is God’s prescribed method for me to develop a specific strength
But you, dear friends, carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, staying right at the center of God’s love, keeping your arms open and outstretched, ready for the mercy of our Master, Jesus Christ. This is the unending life, the real life! —Jude 20-21 (MSG)
Do I reeeally need this gift?
- I have been chosen to be the gift giver
The one who prays using a private “prayer language” certainly gets a lot out of it, but proclaiming God’s truth to the church in its common language brings the whole church into growth and strength. I want all of you to develop intimacies with God in prayer, but please don’t stop with that. Go on and proclaim his clear truth to others. —1 Corinthians 14:4-5 (MSG)
