Luke 22:39-46 (NIV)

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.

40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”

41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,

42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”

43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.

44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow.

46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

are common in human life.

Jesus prescribed for the struggles of human life.

He the disciples to pray about their struggles (v. 40).

He prayed for in his struggles (vv. 41-44).

He the disciples again to pray even when they failed at it (vv. 45-45).

Big Idea: to God in prayer in all the struggles of your life.

Build a prayer now as part of your walk with Christ.

  • Have a habitual for private prayer. (v. 40: “the place”)

“When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.” —John 18:1-2

  • Have a habitual for private prayer.

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” —Luke 5:16

  • Change your in prayer if you need to (v. 46).

Be about what you want from God in prayer.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” —Matthew 7:7-11

Be to whatever God has willed in prayer.

“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him” —Hebrews 7:7-9
