“Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. For he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had broken down, and he erected altars to the Baals, and made Asheroth, and worshiped all the host of heaven and served them. And he built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, “In Jerusalem shall my name be forever.” And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord. And he burned his sons as an offering in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and used fortune-telling and omens and sorcery, and dealt with mediums and with necromancers. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.” —2 Chronicles 33:1-6
Manasseh was an evil man and did what was evil in God’s sight.
God Still Judges
Manasseh did not follow God. He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had torn down.
The High Places were literally places on big hills or mountaintops where people would go to worship their gods.
Manasseh built altars to Baal and made Asheroth poles. Baal is alive and well in North Carolina. But he’s also alive and well in the church.
Syncretism Is The Merging Of Two
We worship Mammon or Money and God.
We worship our comfort and God.
We worship sports and God.
We worship food and God.
We worship pornography and God.
Molech Worship Is Child
Molech, which his name means king, was worshipped through child sacrifice and we see that in our text today. It says in verse 6 that Manasseh burned his sons as an offering in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom.
Whatever you give to Molech, it was never enough, he will always want more.
“The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Say to the people of Israel, Any one of the people of Israel or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones.” —Leviticus 20:1-2
