Day 355 - With Gentleness and Respect

Emily Green

“But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, but with gentleness and respect;” - 1 Peter 3:15 NASB

1 Peter 3:15 tells us to “always [be] ready to make a defense to everyone who asks [us] to give an account for the hope that is in [us].” When we read the word “defense,” we can be tempted to think about a defensive line in football or a defensive play in basketball. “Defense” can be powerful and hostile; however, Peter clarifies that our defense for our faith should be made with “gentleness and respect.”

Sharing the Gospel with others should be done gently and respectfully. There’s nothing “kind” about yelling at people or speaking harshly with them. Instead, as we share the Gospel and evangelize, we should be gentle with our words. Remember: God’s kindness leads people to repentance (Romans 2:4). Therefore, we should respect the person we’re talking to and know that they are a child of God, even if they don’t know it yet.

As you increase in focus and share the Gospel with others, remember to do it with all love, gentleness, and respect!

Next Steps

  • Think about it: When I share about Jesus with others, am I gentle and respectful? Why or why not?

  • Action Step: Write out what you would say if someone asked you to defend your faith. Then, practice reading it out loud. Make sure you emphasize gentleness and respect in your delivery.
