- Matthew 1:18-23 NLT
18 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly. 20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: 23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son,and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”
Verse 18 says “This is “how” Jesus was born, but what about “why” Jesus was born?
No doubt, Jesus is the reason for “our season.”
Today, let’s consider God’s “reasons” for the season:
I. To save you and me.
Matthew 1:21 NLT
21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”Luke 19:10 NIV
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”Ephesians 2:8 NKJV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,Romans 6:23 NLT
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.John 3:16 NIV
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
II. To give us life and life abundantly.
John 10:10 ESV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.John 10:10 NLT
10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.James 1:17 NIV
17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.Luke 2:1-7 NASB1995
1 Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5 in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. 6 While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
The 4 P’s that keep us from making room for God in our lives:
1. Pride – fear of what people will think if I live for God, stand for God, speak out for God.
- Mark 2:4 NASB1995
4 Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying.
2. People:
- Dependency on people instead of God. Misplaced trust.
- The wrong people or influences.
- 1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV
33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
3. Misplaced Priorities: Sometimes even right things in wrong order can keep us from having room for God in our lives.
- Matthew 6:33 NIV
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
4. Possessions:
There was no room at the inn. In other words, business was booming.
Many are climbing the ladder of success, only to find out one day that the ladder was leaning on the wrong wall.
- Mark 8:36 NIV
36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
III. Jesus Came to Show Us Who God Really Is.
Perhaps, the way we see God and perceive God affects our ability to: Receive from God and Relate to God.
God sent Jesus to show us who He really IS.
John 14:8-9 ESV
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?John 14:7 NIV
7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”John 8:1-5 NLT
1 Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”John 8:6-11 NLT
6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” 11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
God stoops down in the dirt to bring grace to forgive. From the place of Grace, he calls us to a new and better life. Grace and Growth.
GRACE and TRUTH
John 1:14 NIV
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.John 1:17 NIV
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Truth without grace is mean. Grace without truth is meaningless.
God is not far off, distant, angry. He is near, he is rich in love, slow to anger, abounding in mercy.
Matthew 20:28 NLT
28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”Luke 15:3-7 NLT
3 So Jesus told them this story: 4 “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. 6 When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away!
Jesus is the reason for our season, But He is the God who leaves the 99 to find the one. At one time, each of us was the ONE that He left to find.YOU are the REASON for the season. Christmas is about God sending Jesus for YOU.
