Week 3 - Reconstruct … Building Faith on a Firm Foundation
There is a progressive nature to this teaching series…
Week 1 - God is creator, author of life and truth… anchor to trust
Week 2 - God’s loving kindness offered our only Savior in Jesus
Today, we’re talking about Jesus as our means to healing, wholeness… restoration
Let me share some facts…
1. Unless Jesus returns, you will die
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” —NLT Revelation 21:1–5
2. Biblical healing is often misunderstood
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. —NIV Isaiah 53:5
He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. —NLT 1 Peter 2:24
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. —NIV 1 Corinthians 15:56–57
Romans 5… sin came to all through one man… FREEDOM, Healing, and Restoration available for all through one - JESUS
Yet there are so many passages where Christ healed the crowd’s sickness and disease…
Matthew 8 Jesus heals man with leprosy
Mark 2 Jesus heals a man paralyzed
Matthew 9 Jesus heals a man born blind
Luke 3 Jesus heals a woman’s issue of bleeding for 12 years
Matthew 17 Jesus heals a man demon possessed
I could go on…
We are multifaceted people living in a multidimensional world.
John 3 … Jesus and Nicodemus conversation…
Born once and die twice
Born twice and die once
Healing in Scripture… many different words used
OT Hebrew words
- JEHOVA-RAPHA
NT
- IAMAI
- THERAPEUO
- SOZO
God longs to heal and restore us for the mission more than our comfort.
What do we do when we want to be healed…
Seek God
Ask specifically
Believing heart … James 1:6-8, Mark 11
Surrendered spirit
How does God heal…
1. By His Spirit, through our obedience
He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you.” —NLT Exodus 15:26
2. It can be instant, but often it’s a process
But the officer said, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come into my home. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. —NLT Matthew 8:8
2 Kings 5 … Naaman commanding General Aramean, modern-day Syria, had leprosy…
Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel…Then Naaman said, “All right, but please allow me to load two of my mules with earth from this place, and I will take it back home with me. From now on I will never again offer burnt offerings or sacrifices to any other god except the LORD. —NLT 2 Kings 5:15;17
3. Generally, it will always involve other people
Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven. Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. —NLT James 5:13–16
The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. —NLT John 10:10
I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten… —ESV Joel 2:25
You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to you and not be silent.
O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever! —NLT Psalm 30:11–12
