Discussion Questions

‌Use the following questions based on today’s sermon as a starting point for spiritual discussions with your family or a small group of Christian friends this week.

‌Fellowship—Relationship with a Purpose

• What level of risk are you willing to take with your body? Are you a daredevil or do you keep things safe? What is the riskiest behavior you normally pursue?

‌Growth—Thinking About Spiritual Matters

• Do you view your body as a part of your spiritual life? See 1 Thessalonians 5:23. Why does your physical body impact your spiritual direction?

• Of the three examples listed in the sermon (Peter – Matthew 14, David – 1 Samuel 17, Jael – Judges 4), whose action was riskiest? Why?

• How does your appearance impact the way you approach God?

• Explore Leviticus 19:28 and 1 Timothy 2:9. How are we to understand these passages today? Is there any risk to fancy hair, nice accessories, or tattoos today? What do we risk if our opinion on these matters is wrong?

• Who might be a noble example of risking bodily harm? Who might be a thrill-seeking example of risking bodily harm? Explain the difference between their actions.

• Read Proverbs 22:3. Does this mean we shouldn’t take risks? Why?

• Why is sexual sin such a spiritual risk? See 1 Corinthians 6:18.

• Are you more tempted to risk your health with food, alcohol, or something else? Do you fight that temptation or just assume you’ll give in? What does that say about how you view the cross? (Philippians 3:18-19)

• If your goal is to honor the Lord (Romans 14:8), what risks will you take with your body?

‌Prayer – Taking Your Thoughts to God

• “Dear God, I offer my body to you as a living and holy sacrifice. Please find my actions acceptable to You as true worship. Help me to choose to use my body in a way that will glorify you.”
