When Lightning Strikes

Job 1:1-5

Job 1:1-5

In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil. He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make arrangements for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.

Life is smooth sailing one moment and a total storm the next.

Then the doubts begin…

When lightning strikes your life, remember:

• God plays in a higher league than we do.

• We must not dwell upon why, but upon who.

CONSIDER A MAN NAMED JOB

A real man

Likely a contemporary of Jacob.

He was hardly a candidate for disaster!
• His Faith was Strong and Alive! (1:1)
• His Family was Full and Blessed! (1:2)
• His Fortune was Vast and Great! (1:3)
• His Fame went Far and Wide! (1:3)
• His Fathering was Spiritual and Sacrificial! (1:4-5)

AN INESCAPABLE STORM

• Tragedy is a required course, not a chosen elective.
• Those who trust God are like tall trees (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
• We can expect that those who stand tallest for God will draw the lightning.

Just when you think you can’t take any more, when all hell is breaking loose around you, remember… you may be doing something right!
