Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon
Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:
The New City Catechism
Lord’s Day 11
What Does God Require in the Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Commandments?
Sixth, that we do not hurt, or hate, or be hostile to our neighbor, but be patient and peaceful, pursuing even our enemies with love. Seventh, that we abstain from sexual immorality and live purely and faithfully, whether in marriage or in single life, avoiding all impure actions, looks, words, thoughts, or desires, and whatever might lead to them. Eighth, that we do not take without permission that which belongs to someone else, nor withhold any good from someone we might benefit. (Romans 13:9)
Scripture
Hebrews 6:13-20 - (English Standard Version)
- 13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” 15 And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. 16 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. 17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Understanding and Applying
- God’s Character: What is God like that we can be confident of all that He declares or promises (vv. 13, 17-18; Isaiah 46:8-10, 55:10-11)?
- God’s Promise: Despite life in a fallen world, why can we have ‘strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope’ set before us (vv. 13-18; Ephesians 1:3-8; Hebrews 5:6)?
- God’s Son: How does the passage ultimately point us to Jesus, our great High Priest (vv. 19-20; Hebrews 12:2; 2 Corinthians 1:19-22)?
• Having learned about the person and work of Jesus (Hebrews 1-5), why is He our great hope and worthy of all our affection?
- Sunday: In what ways is the Sunday gathering a declaration of God’s character, God’s promises, and God’s Son for the people of God?
• In what ways is your faith strengthened as you consider the character of God?
