Series Overview: In this series, we will be taking an in-depth look into the seven specific statements Jesus voiced while He was on the cross. Our goal through this series will be to encourage and challenge you to ensure your faith life and life comittments are aligned with the message of the cross more than it ever has been before. Here we go!
LUKE 23:33-43 NIV
When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” 36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” 38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews. 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
The second statement Jesus made on the cross…“Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” …provides us (3) assurances:
He has saved you. [Assurance of salvation]
ISAIAH 64:6 NIV
All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
1 JOHN 1:7 NLT
But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
EPHESIANS 2:8-9 NIV
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith— and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
He will be with you. [Assurance of presence]
COLOSSIANS 1:27 NIV
Christ in you, the hope of glory.
PHILIPPIANS 1:6 NIV
…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
ROMANS 7:15-20 NIV
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
ROMANS 7:24 NIV
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is
subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
He will never forsake you. [Assurance of promise]
HEBREWS 13:5 NIV
Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.
ROMANS 5:20 AMP
But where sin increased, [God’s remarkable, gracious gift of] grace [His unmerited favor] has surpassed it and increased all the more.
ROMANS 10:9 NIV
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
JOHN 3:16 NIV
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
MATTHEW 10:33 AMP
But the one who denies and rejects Me before men, that one I will also deny and reject before My Father who is in heaven.
HEBREWS 3:15 NLT
Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts…
