“But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.” John 14:26 (AMP)
Paraclete - “the One who comes alongside.”
THIS WEEK’S POWER VERSE
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8
1) The Holy Spirit is My
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Romans 8:26
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit [the spiritual illumination and the enabling of the Holy Spirit] for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:7 (AMP)
2) The Holy Spirit is My
But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. Romans 8:9
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17
3) The Holy Spirit is My
“And when He comes, He will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.” John 16:7-9
4) The Holy Spirit is My
And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, Ephesians 5:18
How am I filled with God’s Spirit?
God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:5-6

CONNECTION GROUP GUIDE
Opening Question: Have you ever felt confused or unsure about the Holy Spirit’s role in your life?
Key Takeaways:
- The Holy Spirit is not a force or concept, but a personal and active member of the Trinity.
- Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as the Paraclete - “the One who comes alongside” to help us.
- The Holy Spirit plays four crucial roles in our lives:
- Comforter
- Controller
- Convicter
- Constant Companion
Discussion Questions:
- “The Holy Spirit is wonderful, not weird. The Holy Spirit is supernatural, not spooky.” How does this perspective challenge or affirm your view of the Holy Spirit?
- Read Romans 8:26. How does knowing that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us impact your approach to prayer and difficult situations?
- Because the Holy Spirit is our Comforter, we can “risk getting uncomfortable.” What are some ways you might step out of your comfort zone to serve God or others?
- Discuss the difference between being self-controlled and Spirit-controlled. What areas of your life do you find it hardest to yield control to the Holy Spirit?
- How do you distinguish between conviction from the Holy Spirit and condemnation? Why is this distinction important?
- We receive the Holy Spirit at salvation, but we need to be continually filled. What practical steps can you take to be “filled with the Spirit” on a daily basis?
Practical Applications:
- Daily Spirit-Filling Habit: Each morning this week, pray specifically for the Holy Spirit to fill and guide you throughout the day.
- Comfort Challenge: Identify someone in your life who needs comfort and reach out to them, allowing the Holy Spirit to work through you.
- Control Inventory: Make a list of areas in your life where you struggle to yield control. Pray over each item, asking the Holy Spirit to take control.
- Conviction Reflection: The next time you feel convicted about something, pause to thank the Holy Spirit for His guidance and take concrete steps to address the issue.
- Companionship Reminder: Place a small reminder (like a bookmark or phone wallpaper) to remind you throughout the day that the Holy Spirit is always with you.
Closing Prayer: Holy Spirit, we thank You for Your presence in our lives. Help us to be more aware of Your work as our Comforter, Controller, Convicter, and Constant Companion. Fill us anew, guide our steps, and empower us to live fearlessly and freely for Jesus. Amen.
