This week: The Holy Spirit and Jesus

The Holy Spirit played a pivotal role in Jesus’ life and ministry. What Jesus did for us on the cross is so important to the forgiveness of our sins…but we fail to realize that the Holy Spirit participated in the movement of Jesus.

Jesus Birth

The Holy Spirit’s intimate connection with Jesus is evident from the beginning of Jesus’ earthly ministry. In Luke 1:35, the angel tells Mary,

”The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

The role of the Holy Spirit in the conception highlights the belief that God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. It’s a central tenet of Christian faith that God took on human nature to redeem humanity, and this passage reveals the beginning of that event.

Jesus Baptism

At His baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove, as described in Matthew 3:16-17:

”As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’”

Just as the Spirit hovered over the waters during creation (Genesis 1:2), the Spirit descends upon Jesus, signaling a new creation or a new beginning with the inauguration of Jesus’ ministry.

Jesus Temptation

Jesus’ life on earth was consistently undergirded by the Spirit’s power.
Luke 4:1 tells us,

”Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.”

The Holy Spirit empowering Jesus in the wilderness reflects the divine assistance in trials…Jesus’ victory over temptation is also a testament to the Spirit’s enabling power.

Jesus Resurrection

Jesus Himself promised the coming of the Holy Spirit to His disciples.
In John 14:16-17, He assured them,

”And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

Jesus assures his disciples that the Holy Spirit “lives with you and will be in you.”

This statement highlights the intimate and internal presence of the Holy Spirit within each believer. Unlike Jesus’ physical presence, which was limited to a specific time and place, the Holy Spirit will dwell within believers permanently, offering continuous companionship and support.

If the holy spirit was involved in every major moment of Jesus’ life…why can’t He be involved in yours?
