Skipping Gen 38, but coming back to it in a few weeks
Joseph
Sold as a
1). Work - Lord was with him
Colossians and Ephesians - slaves
Glorify God
The lowest kind of work can bring glory to God
Becomes the master of the house
2). Questions about Temptation
What is
This feals especially unfair
After all he’d been through…
For Joseph
Trauma wasn’t a good
After all, this is how this works generationally
One after another
That’s why we don’t judge Potifar’s wife
Just because it feels good doesn’t make it
…and in the long run, it actually makes us slaves
Joseph was living as a slave, but was a free person - because he knew God
If he had said yes to her, he would have finally and fully become a slave
Sin traps us, promises us
Makes us take a good desire and
Usually ourselves
We become slaves
What are we to do?
Paul speaks of temptation
12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. —1 Cor 10:12-14
Wrongly quoted
Not life won’t give you more than you can bear
We die
Temptation
Common to man
God is faithful - not you
He won’t let you be tempted beyond what you can bear
Paul says -
Joseph - fled
We want to court it, control it
Sin isn’t a toy - its a potential master, and it wants to make us slaves
See it, flee it
How can we do this?
Especially when we keep messing up
Paul says something nuts
God is
Jesus, the new and better Joseph
He was tempted…from the wilderness to the cross
Unlimited power, complete trauma - never bent it towards himself
He was crushed by our sin
He died…but rose in victory
Gospel not - go be Joseph
Gospel is - Jesus was your Joseph
14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. —Hebrews 4:14-16
Confidence not in our own
Confidence to
Grace and mercy in our time of need
Flee, run
But now we have a place to go
Jesus - there everytime
He can sympathize
He was victorious
We have his victory
That’s why temptation can never overtake us
That’s why we have the power and wisdom to flee from sin
Run to Christ
