To separate from profane things and dedicated to God; consecration, purification; sanctification of heart and life!
Stages of Sanctification
1) Begins at
:
1 Corinthians 15:21-23 (ESV)/Romans 6:17
2) It increases throughout our lives.
We have both an
and

Active Role
A. Obedience Phil 2:12-13
B. Strive for holiness Heb 12:14
C. Abstain from immorality 1 These 4:3

Benefits of Sanctification
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory (majesty and splendor) of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.
Story of Steph Curry…
We behold God’s glory!
Glory Grk. Doxa: Good opinion concerning God which results in praise, honour, and glory. We see His Splendor, brightness, excellence, kingly majesty! Only God!
Sanctification leads to transformation (to be more like Jesus!)
Sanctification leads to more sanctification
LET’S BE REAL:
- It can be more like a jagged line that moves upward.
- It can occur at different times within our lives.
- Sometimes it looks like we are regressing!
- In extreme cases, it can have little progress if we neglect the passive and active roles we play in sanctification.
Sanctification is completed at death (for our souls) and when the Lord returns (for our bodies)
Old Testament
Ecclesiastes 7:20 (ESV)
20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.
New Testament
1 John 1:8 (ESV)
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
John tells us if we say we have no sin then we decide ourselves…We nullify the need for progressive sanctification!
Even mature Christians sin:
Isaiah 6:5 (NLT)
5 Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”
Job 42:5-6
5 My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you.6 Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes.
Sanctification is something that will never be completed in this Life!
Question: Why strive for something that you will not attain?
Quote John Murray
What is Sanctification?
Sanctification is the continual work of God and man that allows us to say no to sin and yes to righteousness. It begins at regeneration (when we are born again), continues throughout our lifetime, and is fully completed when Jesus returns. The Triune God plays distinct roles in our sanctification while calling us to both passively and actively participate. Sanctification is us becoming more like Jesus and it’s the primary call for Christians! It is God’s will for every believer to be Sanctified!
