David: One Thing
July 19, 2019

One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple. —Psalm 27:4

GOD’S BEAUTY

1) His

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God will shine forth! —Psalm 50:2
And they do not rest day or night saying: “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” —Revelation 4:8

2) His

Then Jesus said, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you. Let Me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” —Matthew 11:28,29
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” —John 10:11

GOD’S WAYS

Teach me Your way, O Lord, and lead me in a smooth path…—Psalm 27:11

Humility: the absence of

with an abundance of

“Blessed are the poor in spirit…the meek…and the merciful…” —Matthew 5:3-7
“Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.” —Matthew 5:44
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. —Romans 12:21
And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied inside the house. So David played music with his hand, as at other times; but there was a spear in Saul’s hand. 11And Saul cast the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” But David escaped his presence twice. 12Now Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, but had departed from Saul. 13Therefore Saul removed him from his presence, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people. 14And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.—1 Samuel 18:10–14

Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. —James 3:2

Even in Saul’s death David chose to honor him (read 2 Samuel 1).

Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the LORD and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. —2 Samuel 1:11,12

David changed the views of the men who had previously urged him to kill Saul (1 Sam. 24; 26). Many can lament a “Jonathan” in their life, but few can lament a “Saul.“
