Lead Like Jesus - Week 1

Leadership is Influence… And every person has influence

We exist to lead others to Christ and provide steps to follow Him.

Today… the Heart of a Leader

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. —NLT Proverbs 4:23

A lot of leadership books work outside in, not always inside out…

There are two dominate motivations that drive people to lead….

1. Responsibility-based leadership

2. Rewards-based leadership

Responsibility-based leadership… to serve and care for the people you lead

Rewards-based leadership… you want to be rewarded by people and receive power from leading… you want the perks… or at least perceived perks

Then the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus with her sons. She knelt respectfully to ask a favor. “What is your request?” he asked.
She replied, “In your Kingdom, please let my two sons sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.” —NLT Matthew 20:20-21

When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. But Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. —NLT Matthew 20:24-27

A servant = focuses on doing things for others rather than for oneself

A slave = someone who is bound to obey their master’s commands and teachings

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” —NLT Matthew 20:28

Quick Check List-

1. Servant leaders want others to look good.
Reward leaders want only themselves to look good.

2. Servant leaders find approval in one place = God
Reward leaders believe self-worth = my performance + others’ approval…

Two Big Things to fight against to become a servant leader:

1. Pridethe antidote is Humility
2. FearTrust

Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the LORD means safety. —NLT Proverbs 29:25

If we want to see this world transformed—your workplace transformed, your family transformed, your marriage transformed — then it’s going to take not only ourselves leaning in… but all of us leading, which is serving like Jesus…
