Colossians 2:1-10

2:1 | Paul carried a deep burden of concern for the believers in Colossae and nearby Laodicea, and he labored for them in prayer. Conflict comes from the same Greek root as striving (agocenizomenos) in 1:29, from which we get our word agony. Prayer often involves struggle, especially intercessory prayer that is on behalf of others. Prayer is war. It takes the very best a person has to offer and asks him or her to fight with diligence (Rom. 15:30).

2:2-3 | The theme of Christ’s preeminence continues as Paul states that in Him can be found all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Any other claims are false. In wisdom and knowledge, as in all else, Christ is supreme.

2:4-5 | With heresy standing at the Colossian church’s doorstep, Paul was concerned that these Christians were being drawn away by persuasive words (Rom. 16:18; Eph. 4:14; 5:6). But what was true in Paul’s day is true in all generations: the best defense is often a strong offense. Therefore, Christians who make Christ the sole focus and center of their faith will be able to reject false teachers and remain steadfast.

2:6 | This verse is divided into two parts based on faith and practice. People come to faith with empty hands and nothing to offer. But at the foot of the cross, they receive the gift of Christ Jesus the Lord, and this motivates their daily choices and direction (walk).

2:7 | To be rooted, built up, established, and to abound in thanksgiving are all inevitable results of living a Christ-centered life. Counting blessings is the greatest mathematics exercise in the universe; it helps Christians understand that the sum total of every good and perfect gift comes from above. A thankful heart adds clarity to the believer’s life; it never confuses.

2:8-9 | Paul rebuffs the four deceptions that undermine Christianity in all ages – philosophy, deceit, the tradition of men, the basic principles of this world – with a definitive and positive statement regarding Christ’s identity. Believers have all they need in Jesus.
