DQ: The Original Christmas Carols - Pt. 2
December 15, 2024

INTRO: When do you sing? Do you need motivation to sing? What motivates you to sing?

READ: Luke 1:5-13, Psalm 141:2, Revelation 5:8, Revelation 8:3, & Isaiah 29:13

Begin the time by praying together

DISCUSS
1. Read Psalms 141:2, Revelations 5:8, and Revelations 8:3 (above) . What new insight about prayer do these passages give you?
2. Might these passages offer any insight about unanswered prayer? Share if you are willing.
3. The angel Gabriel visited both Mary and Zechariah. How were the two responses different?
4. Contrast the social standing of Mary and Zechariah. (Hint: Pastor Robert said that Zechariah was one half of a power couple. ) Which person had the most reason to fear Gabriel’s words?
5. How would you explain Zechariah’s hesitation to the angel’s words? Can you relate to him in any way?
6. Read the passage from Isaiah 29. Share (if comfortable) a time you have experienced “going through the motions of righteousness”. How did this period end? Can you provide any encouragement for someone who might be going through that now?
7. Read the passages from Zechariah’s Song above (Luke 1:68-79). For what specific things does Zechariah praise God? (Hint: there are at least 6!)
8. Which of these praises is most meaningful to you? If you are comfortable, share why.

PRAY: We praise you Father in all our circumstances today. We, like Zechariah, can go through the motions of righteousness. We can forget that you hear our prayers. Thank you for hearing them and for your power in our lives. Thank you for using us imperfect people. We can serve you without fear. We have some things we want to say about you, God. (Continue on your own.) Amen.

In smaller groups, share and pray:
- Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your time
- Listen to the Lord for guidance in how to pray for one another and then pray
- Take time to pray for one person at a time
