Summer of Psalms **

TODAY:

Psalms 90

MAIN IDEA:
God is eternal. Our human life is brief.
*Keep heavenly priorities and live as if your days are numbered. *

*90:1- 6 *

*Psalm 90:1 Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. 3 You turn mortals back into dust And say, “Return, you sons of mankind.” (This is Moses saying that God controls the beginning and the end.) 4 For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, Or like a watch in the night. JOKE Thousand years = Second – Thousand Dollars = Penny 5 You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; In the morning they are like grass that sprouts anew. 6 In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew; Toward evening it wilts and withers away. NASB *

**THE POINT:

God is so great and timeless. Never lose sight of that truth in this brief and temporary life. **

*THINK ABOUT THAT STATEMENT:
1,000 years in Your sight is like yesterday. *

*90:7-9 *

*7 For we have been consumed by Your anger, And we have been terrified by Your wrath. 8 You have placed our guilty deeds before You, Our hidden sins in the light of Your presence. 9 For all our days have dwindled away in Your fury; We have finished our years like a sigh. NASB *

*THE POINT:
God has every right to punish our guilt and sin.
He owes us nothing and we are on borrowed time. *

90:10-11

*10 As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty years, Yet their pride is only trouble and tragedy; For it quickly passes, and we disappear. 11 Who understands the power of Your anger And Your fury, according to the fear that is due You? NASB *

*THE POINT:
Our life is extremely short, and it is easy to misunderstand.
*

*90:12-17 *

*12 So teach us to number our days, (Or teach us our days are numbered) That we may present to You a heart of wisdom. 13 Do return, Lord; how long will it be? (The idea here is man has a trajectory to the dust, God has a trajectory towards eternity. The Psalmist is asking is for divine intersection) And be sorry for Your servants. 14 Satisfy us in the morning with Your graciousness, That we may sing for joy and rejoice all our days. 15 Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us, And the years we have seen evil. 16 Let Your work appear to Your servants And Your majesty to their children. 17 May the kindness of the Lord our God be upon us; And confirm for us the work of our hands; Yes, confirm the work of our hands. NASB *

*THE POINT:
The days of our life are a gift meant to be lived with purpose and in relationship with the Father. *

MAIN IDEA:

God is eternal. Our human life is brief.

Keep heavenly priorities and live as if your days are numbered.

*APPLICATION:
So how do we live this way? *

*Ephesians 5:15-17 - 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. ESV
*

*QUESTION: If you found out you had one year left to live…what would this next year look like? *

*Psalm 39:4-7 - 4 “Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered—how fleeting my life is…VS. 6 We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. 7 And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. NLT *

**IN CLOSING:

Gaining a heart of wisdom means prioritizing:
1. God, 2. Family, 3. Everything Else
**

***1. God:

  • You have died to your old self and have committed to following His word and His ways.
  • He is the authority on morals, not society.
  • He is the standard of love and forgiveness
  • He determines truth and direction for your life.

    1. Family
  • They are your primary calling, ministry, and mission.

  • Wherever you are, be all the way there
  • Your love for God is most accurately seen in how you love and treat your family.

    1. Everything Else
  • Let God’s word be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.

  • Don’t do anything that would negatively impact your relationship with God or your family.

MAIN IDEA:

God is eternal. Our human life is brief.

Keep heavenly priorities and live as if your days are numbered.

*CHALLENGE QUESTION:
Things that matter the most should never be at the mercy to things that matter the least.
Where do you need God’s wisdom to live out the rest of your numbered days with more of an eternal perspective?
*
