“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. You trust in God; trust also in me.” John 14:1
This is a passage of personal comfort. Jesus uses the word “you” over 30 times.
Here’s why you are going to be okay…
1. You have
“My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:1-3
2. You have
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
3. You will
“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” John 14:12
4. You know
“If you love me, keep my commands.” John 14:15
Greek entolas: orders, instructions given to someone more junior, gameplan
5. You are
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you… the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things…” John 14:18,26
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27
QUESTIONS For personal reflection or group discussion
1. What is troubling your heart today? Which of the 5 points from the
message helps you most right now?
2. Some anxiety is uncontrollable. But how do you sometimes “let” your heart get troubled? What can you to do change that?
3. Jesus says in verse 15 that obeying him is about love. How does this change how you think of obedience?
4. The Holy Spirit is called the Greek word ‘paraklete’ in verse 16, which means ‘one called alongside’. There’s no exact English equivalent so translations use ‘Helper’, ‘Counsellor’, ‘Advocate’, ‘Comforter,’ etc. How has the Holy Spirit done these things for you?
5. In verse 18 Jesus promised, “I will not leave you as orphans.” He will be with us. How would truly believing this every day impact your confidence and emotions?
