Confident in Christ

Philippians 1:1-11 says 1Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: 2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3I thank my God every time I remember you. 4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5because of your

in the from the first day until now, 6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. 7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. 8God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. 9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10so that you may be able to what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11filled with the fruit of that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

Q1 In verse 4, the apostle Paul (together with Timothy) writes about the partnership in the gospel with the church in Phillipi. What were the aspects of that partnership? Try to list them in the blue box below.

Q2 In verse 6, the day of Christ Jesus is mentioned. Until that day he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion. If you believe that Jesus’ return will happen in two phases (pre-tribulation rapture and Jesus’ second coming), what is meant in this verse?

Q3 In verse 10, Paul’s hope and expectation is expressed, culminating the church to be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. So, again, what is meant with the day of Christ?

Q4 In verse 11, the Philippians are taught that they will be filled with the fruit of righteousness through Jesus. Even in the Old Testament some people were righteous. Noah walked blameless with God and was a righteous man (Genesis 6:9). Abram believed the Lord, and he (God) credited it to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). Are you righteous? Explain how? Are you perfect or are you a “work in progress”? When will you be perfect?

Q5 Explain why this study is called “Confident in Christ”.
