Jonah 1:17-2:10
1:17 | God miraculously prepared a great fish, not to punish Jonah – as commonly taught – but to discipline Jonah and restore him to fellowship. God’s purpose in discipline is always restoration (Prov. 3:12; Heb. 12:6).
2:2-6 | Jonah’s experience showed him that God is aware of all things and not only rescues His children but constantly acts to call them back to Himself.
2:4 | Jonah describes how he felt when he faced death, before the fish swallowed him: I have been cast out of Your sight. This is a common thought of rebellious humans.
2:7 | Jonah turned to (remembered) the LORD for deliverance, yet this subsequent behavior did not suggest that his attitude changed. When repentance is real, people have the same attitude about their sin as God does – “This was wrong” – and they do an about face.
