Discipleship is one Christ-follower helping another Christ-follower take their NEXT STEP.
You start with: BE A DISCIPLE.
Next: MAKE A DISCIPLE.
19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon… 20 I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel. —Philippians 2:19-22 (NIV)
And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. —2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV)
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” —Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
HOW DO I MAKE A DISCIPLE?
1. You pray and select a person.
“…pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest…” —Luke 10:2 (ESV)
2. You spend time with them.
He appointed twelve that they might be with him… —Mark 3:14 (NIV)
3. You increase your commitment to holiness.
This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. —1 John 2:5b-6 (NIV)
4. You show them how it works.
“For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.” —John 13:15 (ESV)
5. You’re willing to have hard conversations.
Be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. —2 Timothy 4:2b (ESV)
6. You expect them to make a disciple.
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit–fruit that will last.” —John 15:16a (ESV)
