Mary, Martha and the One Thing Needed

Luke 10:38-42

  1. Introduction: A Call to Prioritize Devotion Over Doing
Are you prioritizing devotion to Jesus or just doing things for Him?
Luke 10:21-22 – Childlike openness vs. hardened wisdom.

  2. The Story: A Tale of Two Sisters (Luke 10:38-42)
Jesus stops at the home of Mary & Martha while on His journey.
Mary’s Choice – Sat at Jesus’ feet, listening.
Martha’s Distraction – Focused on serving rather than being with Jesus.
Martha complains: “Lord, don’t you care? Tell her to help me!”

  3. The Challenge: What Are You Focused On?
Luke 10:41-42 – Jesus gently corrects Martha.
Many things vs. One thing needed.
    What is the ‘Good Portion’?
    Devotion to Jesus.
Loving Him by listening to His word.

  4. Challenge #1: How Do We Relate to Jesus?
Hosea 6:6 – God desires steadfast love over sacrifice.
Micah 6:6-8 – Walking humbly with God matters more than works.
Are you finding identity in your work, or in your relationship with Jesus?

  5. Challenge #2: Can I Surrender Control?
    Doing is easier than being.
Faith is about letting Jesus lead.
1 Samuel 15:22 – “To obey is better than sacrifice.”
Teachability Index = Desire to learn × Willingness to change.

  6. Conclusion: Will You Sit at Jesus’ Feet?
Charles Spurgeon: Sitting with Jesus means peace, strength, wisdom, and zeal.
Martha worked for Jesus but missed time with Him.
    What will you choose?
