The Death of Jesus Christ

Christ’s death was for us

You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. —1 John 3:5

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:8

“For God so loved the world,[i] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. —John 3:16-17

He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. —1 John 2:2

Christ’s death was foretold

Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed.
For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground, he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected[b] by men, a man of sorrows[c] and acquainted with[d] grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. —Isaiah 53:1-6

16
For dogs encompass me;
a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet[b]—
17
I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;
18
they divide my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.** —Psalms 22:16-18

Christ’s death was brutal

Sweat blood, beaten, whipped, scourged, back flayed open, crown of thorns on His head, ridiculed, mocked, insulted, spat on, condemned, carried the heavy cross, pierced on the cross, beaten beyond recognition, suffocation, hung out

As many were astonished at you—
his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,
and his form beyond that of the children of mankind— —Isaiah 52: 14

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. —Isaiah 53:7

Christ’s death was glorious

Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last. —Luke 23:46

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, —1 Peter 3:18

18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.

19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,

21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. —Romans 5:18-21
